The Spy Museum in Tampere opened in 1998 and was the world's first museum specialising in espionage and presenting world-famous secret agents and their methods. The museum combines historical events, equipment and people with activities in a fascinating way: visitors can try numerous tricks of the espionage trade, such as changing your voice, eavesdropping, grabbing e-mails and code breaking.
Items on display include technical surveillance devices, disguised and agent weapons, optical devices, cryptography devices, forgeries, badges and medals, handcuffs, propaganda etc. from around the world. There is even a working lie detector!
The gallery of famous spies includes Oleg Gordievski, the highest ranking KGB defector ever from the Soviet Union; Sidney Reilly, an inspiration for James Bond, who endeavoured to assassinate Vladimir Ilyich Lenin and Mata Hari, the femme fatale convicted and executed by the French for allegedly spying for Germany during World War I.
Group tours and events can also be tailored to meet specific interests and requirements. A meeting room is available for smaller groups. Several restaurants and sauna facilities are available in the same building.
